“ Call on God but row away from the rocks “ -  Hunter S. Thompson

I simply love this quote. So simple yet hits the target. As a Christian I sometimes get worn out by the over spiritualizing that is done in every day life.

What I mean by that is that there is just so much of life that is common sense that we do not need to pray about. For example, I don’t need to pray about whether or not I want to have creamy or crunchy peanut butter on a sandwich …I really don’t. I simply like creamy and so does the rest of my family and I would imagine that most folks operate the same way in their lives. Yet I heard a lady once ask for prayer that she would make the correct choice between these two types of peanut butter. Crazy foolishness.

Prayer is also not needed to know whether I should venture out in blizzard conditions in twenty inches of snow and an inch of ice on the roads. God gave me a brain to make that decision.

I a
lso never prayed that God would show me if I should let my teenager go spend time at a friend’s house when I did not know that friend’s parents. It was just a given that my kids would never do that because any mom knows it is borrowing trouble to do so.

The list is endless as to decisions with my children that required no prayer….whether or not they would faithfully attend church, whether or not they would date a non-christian, whether they would be allowed to ever drink an alcoholic beverage in our home, or if they would be allowed to hitchhike or smoke or drive without a licence or be late for a job etc …..I could type all day but I will spare you as I think you get the point.

Then there are areas in all of our lives in which we do most assuredly need to call on God…yet while we do, we should have the sense to row away from the rocks as well. Remember the old saying “God helps those who help themselves ?”  True it is but God also helps those who don’t have the sense to help themselves whatsoever. That is how He found most of us in fact. We weren’t looking for Him, He was looking for us and we responded. His love arrow was shot in our direction first and God’s Word even tells us that….that He first loved us.

Once we are His child though, we need to use the brain that we were blessed with. We need to utilize our common sense, and practice the ability to discern. Those are all gifts that are unique to humans as opposed to all other creatures that He created.

Are there some rocks that you are headed toward in your life? If so…go ahead and ask the Lord to help you skirt them but take out that row and begin paddling at the same time. He will bless you for your efforts.
