“Look, you cannot underestimate the fine power of self-loathing in all of this,” the Jersey native told The New Yorker.

“You think, I don’t like anything I’m seeing, I don’t like anything I’m doing, but I need to change myself, I need to transform myself. I do not know a single artist who does not run on that fuel.”

The above quotes are the words of "THE BOSS" - Bruce Springsteen. It was widely reported this week that the artist was deeply depressed in the eighties when he was on the cusp of super stardom. He said that he fought serious depression and suicidal thoughts for several years and completely loathed himself. He stated that he wanted to "transform" himself but felt that he never could.

 Welcome to the human race.

How often do we see these sorts of stories? Folks who have achieved incredible wealth and fame yet are so completely empty and unfulfilled that they consider taking their own lives. Another article about Springsteen talks about the void and vacuum that he struggled with during this time and still struggles with to a degree today. This is a hole that we all feel whether we verbalize it or not.
Every person knows that void and if we go through these seventy or eighty years ( the long run ) without understanding what this hole is and how to fill it , then we will live out our years not grasping why we were put on this earth at all. The signs are all around us, yet so many miss it. Many live out their days not connecting the dots. We see day and night, we see the land, we see the oceans, we see animals, rainbows, and even every day expressions that we speak all point to our " How to LIve LIfe Manual " - the Bible. It talks about everything that we see and observe here in this life yet so many never make the connection.

I never read the Bible growing up but once I started as a twenty-one year old, I was stunned. I had been completely ignorant of the specific words of our Lord Jesus and how relevant and practical His words were to our lives today. It was when I began digesting the words of the Bible that I truly learned that there is " nothing new under the Sun" . Suddenly everything that I wondered about and confused about began to make sense. The origins of the earth, the beginning of man, how man sinned , how Jesus came to atone for that sin , and how we can live forever when we trust in that atonement all began to fit together to complete the greatest puzzle ever known. The pieces all came together.

As I read Bruce Springsteen's account of his emptiness, his void, I wanted to shout this truth at the very words that I was reading. The truth is that no matter who you are, how much money you have, how well known you are, you will have a sense that this life is not all there is. There is a gentle knawing within us that there must be more than accomplishing whatever we can for this brief period that we are in this world and then bam...we die and it is all over. So senseless and futile of a thought yet when that very notion invades the minds and spirits of individuals, it is no wonder that they seriously consider ending it all by taking their own lives.

It goes without saying that I do not know Bruce Springsteen personally. I wish that I did though so I could call him up and share this truth with him. The same article also talked about how his father suffered from severe depression almost all of his adult life and his son feared that he would somehow inherit his mental instability. To his credit, his fear of having an unstable life was so strong that he never once took any drugs and that is admirable when one considers how rampant drugs are in the entertainment industry. However my desire and wish for Springsteen would be for him to understand that all of us inherit both a mental and spiritual instability from our parents and they in turn inherited it from their parents and so forth all the way down the line to Adam and Eve. The answer to that insanity is Jesus Christ. He makes us sane.

Bruce Springsteen, there is a remedy for sanity and He is the true Boss. My prayer is that you some day can know Him if you do not yet to this day. Perhaps you will. If not, then the void will linger.

Reader, do you feel this void ? If so , find yourself a Bible and begin reading the gospel of John. Really ponder the words of Christ and what He said. Accept and trust it as the truth that it is. Fill the hole. Learn to love HIm. Become sane !
