Should We Really Be Surprised by the School Bus Monitor Incident ?

Posted by Pam Hastings on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, In : News

Last week a story broke in the news that had folks crying foul and for good reason. A video clip of middle schoolers launching a vicious verbal attack on an elderly school bus monitor went viral. I suppose it took off in terms of the number of views that it had because it was apparently shocking to many folks. It wasn't to me.

I taught school for many years and perhaps that is why I was saddened by the video but certainly not shocked. I did not teach middle schoolers, I taught third grade how...

Raising Confident Kids !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, June 20, 2012,

Raising confident kids is most assuredly a desire and goal of parents yet is an achievement not always realized. Often we see timid and hesitant youngsters who appear to lack the boldness and determination to set a goal for themselves and then press on to achieve that goal. Why is this ? I believe that many parents unintentionally make some mistakes that foster insecurity and hinder courageous spirits. I normally steer away from "DO'S" and "DON'TS" lists but feel that this subject requires th...

Are Your Kiddos Incorrigible ? Here is Some Helpful Advice :)

Posted by Pam Hastings on Tuesday, June 19, 2012,

Does this young mom in the pic above remind you of yourself at times? If so, trust me, I can relate. I have vivid memories of life in the fast lane of raising kids and the days that I wasn't sure that I would make it. I also was married to a Marine who was often absent on a deployment or in the field training so I became well acquainted with the term "single parenthood" even though it was not permanent but for long periods of time. Now my life is quite different.

I am in the time of m...

Children Sleeping with Parents can be a Dangerous Thing !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Monday, June 18, 2012, In : News

Parents sleeping with children is becoming more popular these days. After all, it is a cozy and sweet experience right? Think again. On the news today one of the headlines is about an eight month old baby that suffocated while sleeping with daddy on an easy chair. The dad fell asleep and so did the baby and the baby became wedged between daddy and the chair and suffered a cardiac arrest. This is not sweet but sad.

It is being reported that infants and very small children are sleeping with mo...

The Jerry Sandusky Case

Posted by Pam Hastings on Saturday, June 16, 2012, In : News

The picture above is of a disturbed and dangerous man. As all of America is aware he is presently on trial for sexually abusing scores of young boys over a period of several years. There are nine alleged victims who have testified over recent days of the unspeakable and disgusting abuse that they suffered at the hands of a man who was heralded as one of the most beloved and revered coaches and mentors in the world of college football. Therein lies the problem. He was so popular, so looked up ...

Are You Grown Up ? Take the Test :)

Posted by Pam Hastings on Thursday, June 14, 2012, In : Lessons Learned

"You grow up the day that you have your first real laugh at yourself" - Ethel Barrymore

This quote gave me more than pause the other day ; it actually stopped me dead in my tracks.  It is because it is true. How many little tykes or young children have you observed laughing along with others when they have been the object or target of a joke or teasing? Not many. Once youngsters sense that others are getting a laugh at their expense usually the tears begin to flow, understandably so.

When ...

The Perils of Passive Parenting

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, June 13, 2012,

A few years ago I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine whose son was in college at the time. She was mentioning a few general facts to me about what his major field of study was and that he was a junior that particular year and had one more year to go until graduation. I asked how he liked college to which she thought for a second and sort of shrugged and said " I guess he likes it okay, he doesn't seem to complain." I then asked her if a young lady has possibly caught his...

Time to Write Again :)

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, In : Lessons Learned

I am about to embark on another writing adventure and am not quite sure if it is because I am a glutton for punishment or perhaps it is just therapeutic for me. Three years ago our youngest son Matty gave me a blog for Mother's Day. I was thrilled with it except for one aspect about it - he named it the Pam Hastings Daily Blog. The sticking point being of course that word that all writers fear and dread which is " daily." Feeling a need to meet the challenge I enthusiastically set about wri...
