Do You Respond Thoughtfully or React Impulsively?

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, In : Lessons Learned

Many years ago when our boys were very little, about three, six, and nine years old, I was pulling into a Walmart parking lot to do some shopping. We lived in Jacksonville, North Carolina as my husband was in the Marine Corps and we were stationed at Camp LeJeune. On this particular day, as I turned into our parking spot,  an incident occurred that has gone down in the family record books as “ Don’t Litter In Front of Mom”

T
his incident is a classic example of behaving on impulse and I d...

Are You Attempting Something Great? Be Prepared To Be Misunderstood!

Posted by Pam Hastings on Monday, October 26, 2009, In : Lessons Learned

“ TO BE GREAT IS TO BE MISUNDERSTOOD.”  - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Being great in this world is not easily achieved nor is it easily understood. People who achieve great things stand out, are noticed, and often become well known for their accomplishments. Success invites attention and scrutiny for which the accomplished must be prepared for and willing to endure.

Those who are deemed “great” tend to think outside the box, are frequently ahead of the times and...

Our Only Hope Is God

Posted by Pam Hastings on Thursday, October 22, 2009, In : Spiritual

My heart is so heavy as I write this morning. I just saw the news announcement that the body that was found in a Georgia landfill is almost certainly that of the little seven year old girl that I wrote about in yesterday’s blog. The finding has not been confirmed yet but a birth mark and the clothes found on the partially clad body leave little doubt that it is indeed the remains of little Somer.

I also just watched a clip of a brief statement that the grandparents gave on the front lawn ...

Let's Pray For Little Somer And Her Family In Florida!

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, In : Current Topics

My mind has been boggled as I have watched the news both late last night and also this morning about the little seven year old girl that has vanished in Florida. She had scampered off of the school bus with her twin brother and older ten year old sister and some other children from the same neighborhood. She ran ahead about fifty yards in front of them and turned a corner. In that couple of minutes that she was out of sight, she disappeared. When her brother and sister arrived home a few min...

Little Ben Reminds His Mimi Of An Important Truth About Listening!

Posted by Pam Hastings on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, In : Lessons Learned

This morning I went to visit someone who was really glad to see me so that is always a great feeling. My daughter in law Stephanie called and invited me to come over and spend some time this morning with her and our grandson Ben who is fourteen months old. That is the sort of invite that you will never see me turn down….time with the grandbabies… so off I went. As I was walking up the front walk he had a big smile on his face and reached out to me when Steph opened the door and at that mo...

Moms...Foster Closeness In Your Children

Posted by Pam Hastings on Monday, October 19, 2009, In : Family

One desire that I have always had is for my children to be close to one another…for their whole lives. I suppose every parent has this desire but over the years of parenting , I have learned that moms are hugely influential in seeing this goal to be accomplished or never realized.

There are several different ways that moms can foster closeness and loyalty between her children but I am going to just zero in on a specific one today which is the practice of minimizing critcism and maximizing p...

Did Balloon Boy Spill The Beans On Larry King Live Last Night?...Time Will Tell !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Friday, October 16, 2009, In : News

I had every intention to not write today about anything in the news but what I witnessed on television yesterday for about two hours prevents me from sticking with my plan. I was one of what I am sure was probably millions of viewers completely captivated by the sight of a helium balloon sailing across the sky with claims that a six year old boy named Falcon was inside the compartment beneath the balloon. This incident was all happening live and I found myself staring at this balloon with my ...

What is Most Entertaining Is Usually Not What Is Most Important !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Thursday, October 15, 2009, In : Spiritual

A couple of weeks ago I happened to be watching the first football game that was being played in the brand new Dallas Cowboys Stadium. This new structure truly was impressive, complete with a sixty yard scoreboard, movable parts, the works. What was most startling about that night though was not all the grand features of this brand spanking new facility but the number of people that filled it up that night. I think the announcer stated that there were over one hundred thousand folks in attend...

A First Grader Sent to An Alternative School For Bringing A Cub Scout Utensil to Class...Where Has Common Sense Gone?

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, In : Current Topics

I read in the news yesterday that a little six year old boy had been suspended for an extended period of time because he brought a cub scout utensil of sorts to school. Apparently the “weapon” in question was a type of fold up can opener and small pocket knife. Initially the punishment that was being slapped on this supposed miniature criminal is that he would have to attend an alternative school designed for problematic kids for a time period of approximated six weeks or so. Once again, ...

Love Most Definitely Means Having To Say You're Sorry !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, In : Lessons Learned

If you are as old as I am ( a little over five decades) you may well remember the movie “ Love Story”  about a young married couple. The young wife is diagnosed with cancer and the basic plot of the movie is how this young couple navigates through this difficult journey from diagnosis until her death. The young wife was played by Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neal played the part of the young husband. It was most certainly a tear jerker for that time and perhaps the signature line of the movie ...

I Am A Grateful And Blessed Mom!

Posted by Pam Hastings on Thursday, October 8, 2009, In : Family

Daughters are such fun creatures…let me explain why. Our daughter who is a freshman in college is on the other side of the country in California. My husband and I send her cute little cards letting her know how much she is loved and missed. What she especially likes about this practice is that we occasionally slip a twenty dollar bill inside. That little green piece of paper is just a nice surprise that makes life a bit easier for her and she appreciates it.

What is so nice and differen...

I Am A Vikings Fan Now- Number Four Is Just Too Fun To Watch!

Posted by Pam Hastings on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, In : Current Topics

A lot of my female friends are most likely going to be irritated about the blog today because the majority of them are not all that jazzed about football. I suppose being raised in a home with five brothers and no sisters simply destined me to be a sports lover and fanatic as when I think back, it seems as though that was all that was ever on the television at my home growing up. I can remember many a Sunday afternoon in which my brothers and my dad were in an uproar cheering on either the S...

Are You Sailing Peacefully Or Paddling Furiously?

Posted by Pam Hastings on Monday, October 5, 2009, In : Lessons Learned

Are you a person who sometimes has a hard time regrouping and collecting yourself once you have been upset about something? I certainly am! There can be an incident or a conversation or a reaction from someone else that so startles me, so stuns me, that I have a hard time letting it go. Not only can I not let it go immediately but I sometimes struggle with it for twenty-four hours afterwards. Not a prescription for peace and tranquility, is it?

Perhaps you can relate but maybe you cannot a...

David Letterman- A Foolish Man Who Is To Be Pitied

Posted by Pam Hastings on Friday, October 2, 2009, In : Current Topics

Isn’t it amazing that David Letterman was cracking jokes about the life and morality of Sarah Palin’s teenaged daughter and yet another news story about him and his own life broke today?

Last night David Letterman announced during his monologue laced with jokes that he has been having sexual affairs with members of his staff. The only reason that he was confessing this is because he was the victim of a recent extortion attempt by someone aware of this and this person was trying to s...

In The Dating World, Texting Is For Cowards !

Posted by Pam Hastings on Thursday, October 1, 2009, In : Current Topics

Our daughter just started college this fall and she is having a ball. She has now been there just over a month and we have received just one “down” call if you will which is not so bad. She is a confident, outgoing, extrovert and so my husband and I were not really expecting her to be experiencing too many homesick days. In fact, she recently said to me on the phone “Mom, I love college, but even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t want to come right back home… I would need to do something di...
